2026.02.12 Fujitec Volunteers for Reed Harvesting to Protect Lake Biwa’s Ecosystem and Environment

Fujitec is a member of the “Network for Protecting Lake Biwa with Reeds,” an organization primarily established by approximately 130 companies based in Shiga Prefecture. Since 2013, we have continuously participated in volunteer reed-harvesting activities aimed at purifying the water of Lake Biwa and preserving its lakeside ecosystem.

Reeds are plants in the Poaceae family that grow around Lake Biwa. They play a vital role in the lake’s environment by absorbing pollutants to purify the water. Furthermore, reed beds serve as essential habitats, providing spawning grounds for the round crucian carp (nigorobuna) and nesting areas for birds like the little grebe (kaitsuburi), as well as other small animals.

If reeds that have withered during the winter are left unattended, they rot in the water and cause water quality to deteriorate. To prevent this, the reeds are harvested during the winter months. This is followed by “reed burning” (yoshi-yaki), which stimulates the growth of new sprouts and eliminates weed seeds and pathogens. Through these efforts, we ensure that healthy reed beds are preserved for the next generation.

We will continue to participate in these activities as part of our ongoing commitment to local community contribution and environmental conservation.
