2024.07.17 The Participation of Fujitec Employees in a Fishing Tournament as Volunteers for the Removal of Alien Fish from Lake Ibanai

On June 16, 2024, for the first time in four (4) years in Higashiomi City, Shiga Prefecture, "The Lake-Ibanai's Fishing Tournament for the Removal of Alien Fish" was held around Lake Ibanai, which is connected to Lake Biwa by the water flow. A total of 20 people including Fujitec’s employees and their family members participated in this tournament as the volunteers to remove alien fish.

This tournament is held with the aim of preserving the lives of fish such as Barbinae and Crucian Carp that are native to this lake as well as continuously maintaining the natural ecological system of this lake under the theme of “Yurikago (cradle),” which means protecting and nurturing the fish and birds that only live around Lake Biwa. To this end, alien fish such as black bass and bluegill that threaten the ecological system of Lake Ibanai are being removed.

In 2011, Fujitec began the necessary removal of non-native fish in order to preserve the ecological system of Lake Biwa and breed the fish that live there under the theme of "The Coexistence of Society and Area," which is one of the themes of Fujitec's materiality. Although we, Fujitec, started this activity in the early years as part of our voluntary plan, we participated in this main tournament in 2018 and the following years. This year corresponds to our third participation since we first participated in such a tournament.

On the day of the tournament, a total of 622 people participated in the tournament and caught 247 pieces of alien fish, bluegill, with a total weight of 17.5 kg. The collected alien fish will be turned into farmyard compost and given to nearby farmers in due course.

Every year, a main tournament is held at the same place,

“Notogawa Suisha (Notogawa Waterwheel) and Canoe Land.”

Many participants gathered for the tournament.
